RAZOR & TIE PICKS UP DION'S ACCLAIMED BRONX IN BLUE ALBUM
(New York, NY) Razor & Tie will nationally release BRONX IN BLUE, the critically acclaimed album from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dion DiMucci. The album, which Rolling Stone called "stunning", was originally released digitally by The Orchard with a limited retail distribution.
BRONX IN BLUE is a 14-track all-acoustic blues collection that highlights the music that first inspired Dion as a child growing up in the Bronx. With songs by Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, Lightnin' Hopkins and Jimmy Reed, the collection is a soulful tour de force for Dion, not only in his familiar role as a magnificently interpretive vocalist but also as a brilliantly innovative guitarist. "If You Wanna Rock & Roll", a new Dion original, is written in the spirit of the blues classics that are heard in BRONX IN BLUE.
The album has been in the Top Ten of Billboard's Blues Chart since its release and continues as a strong seller within that category. Since its initial release, BRONX IN BLUE has reaped high critical praise; Rolling Stone's David Wild wrote "At age sixty-six, Dion has made a moving, graceful piece of work and proved that the Bronx actually is part of the country." Jon Pareles reviewed the album for The New York Times concluding, "He sings like someone whose demons are in the past but still not forgotten." Entertainment Weekly's review compared the album to the Rick Rubin-produced Johnny Cash album suggesting, "Jack White will be lucky to sound this good at 66." Don McCleese, in No Depression, sums up BRONX IN BLUE thusly: "It all sounds like Dion. It all sounds great."
Richard Gottehrer, founder of The Orchard (and co-executive producer of the album), suggested that Dion record the album that would become BRONX IN BLUE after hearing the artist interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air in 2003. Dion sequestered himself in a Florida studio last year with percussionist Bob Guertin. He masterfully accompanied himself on one of two guitars - a Taylor or Martin - with the self-produced BRONX IN BLUE the result of those sessions.
